Budget Concerns: How Much Insurance is Enough?

The 4 Factors You Should Consider When Evaluating A Home Insurance Quote

Dustin Duncan

When shopping around for home insurance quotes, it is important to know not only how much the policy is going to cost you, but also exactly what you are getting for your money. In order to effectively evaluate each quote that you receive, you will need to closely examine each of the following four factors.

Factor #1: Price

While maintaining quality home insurance coverage is important, it is also important to make sure you don't go broke paying for this coverage. Consequently, one of the first things you will need to take into consideration when evaluating an insurance quote is how much the policy costs. Be sure to compare all of the pricing options since you can often save a bit of money by choosing to pay the entire premium upfront rather than paying in monthly installments. If you cannot afford to pay for the policy in one lump sum, you may also be able to save by choosing to sign up for automatic payments.

Factor #2: Perils

Not all insurance policies will cover the same set of perils. For instance, while some policies will include flood coverage, other policies will require you to purchase add-on coverage in order to ensure you are protected in the event your home becomes flooded. Carefully examining what perils are covered under each policy you are considering will help to ensure you know exactly what you are getting for your money.

Factor #3: Deductible

The deductible associated with your policy represents just how much you will need to pay out of your own pocket if you need to file a claim against your insurance. In some cases, you will find that a policy that offers significantly lower monthly rates is only able to do so because the deductible associated with the policy is much higher. While choosing a policy with a higher deductible is a great way to save some money on your monthly insurance costs, you will want to make sure that your deductible is set at a rate that is reasonable for you and your wallet.

Factor #4: Coverage Limits

How much coverage you need will depend upon several factors such as the value of your home, current rebuilding costs, and any risk factors associated with your location. When evaluating an insurance quote, it is important to understand all of the coverage limits associated with the policy in order to ensure these limits meet your current insurance needs.

A Final Thought

Identifying all of the important factors associated with a specific insurance policy can be difficult at times. To ensure you have all the information that you need to choose the best policy for your needs, it is always best to work with a knowledgeable insurance agent.
